Service List

HIAS and Council is recognized by the Department of Justice as a non-profit agency qualified to provide immigration services.
We implement our mission and our vision through the following programs:

Refugee Resettlement Services

Our refugee resettlement services provide case management, including employment services, to refugees during the first months of their arrival in the region with the goal of early integration.

Representation and Litigation

Our representation and litigation unit handles more complex immigration processing cases. Our priorities include representing vulnerable immigrant youth, including unaccompanied minors, victims of interpersonal violence, asylum seekers, and those facing removal and separation from family members. In the past year, the agency fielded over 2,000 requests for assistance and provided comprehensive services to over 600 individuals.

Community Education, Training, and Outreach

Our community education, training, and outreach work is incorporated into all of our programming. During the 2008-2009 fiscal year, HIAS and Council staff members attended 39 community events, including appearances on television, radio, and training for legal and social service professionals.

Immigration Processing Assistance

Our immigration processing assistance unit helps individuals with immigrations matters, including employment authorization, family unification, green card, travel document, and document replacement applications. This unit handles 250 matters annually, while fielding over 500 inquiries and requests.

Asylee Outreach Project

Our Asylee Outreach project links persons granted asylum to available services and provides self-sufficiency workshops. We assisted over 200 asylees in 2008-2009.

Citizenship Assistance for Vulnerable Adults Initiative

Our citizenship assistance for vulnerable adults initiative helps elderly and disabled refugees and immigrants who are seeking to naturalize. We recently started the only citizenship class for elderly immigrants and refugees in Philadelphia.
